I was walking past one day and noticed some activity, someone was busy working and shouted hello over the wall. It was Simon who introduced himself as one of the new trustees and told me they had plans to open to the public and serve Pumphreys coffee – of course being a coffee fan I was keen to go.

I visited the Mill Race Café once it opened and was very taken by the warmth of ‘The Cakey Ladies’ (Anne, Olive & Chris) their banter and of course Chris’s cakes.

Most of my work has been office-based so I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors on a weekend. When I heard the café needed volunteers I offered some of my time. It felt like a great opportunity to learn something new.

The Mill Race has a certain charm and I really enjoy meeting people and being part of the local community.
